Lezo has a historic center and many buildings of great architectural and artistic value, including the Gothic image of the Holy Cross, the Basilica of the Holy Christ and the houses with coats of arms, among others.
Lezo has many buildings and reasons to attract visitors. When walking through its streets, visitors will not only come across churches and hermitages full of history, but also many houses with coats of arms with a rich history. There are also many options for eating and drinking, with many bars and restaurants on its streets and several other renowned steakhouses in the countryside.
The Parish Church of San Juan Batalista is located in the Upper Square. The first written texts of the parish date back to 1399. Next to it is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, where the Gothic image of the Holy Cross stands out. Although it was initially just a small chapel, at the end of the 16th century its fame spread due to alleged miracles and devotion to its image increased. Therefore, the current Renaissance basilica was built on the site of the old chapel. It is worth noting that this Basilica houses one of the three beardless Christs in Europe.
Lezo also has historical civil buildings, which are houses with coats of arms. Among the houses with coats of arms from the 16th century, the Arpire-enea, Jamot-enea, Paskual-enea, Zabala-Etxea and Andreone stand out, as well as the 17th century town hall, among others.
Lezo is located at the foot of Mount Jaizkibel and the old town is in great contrast with the mountain. Taking advantage of nature, there are many routes to take, enjoying the two-color landscapes, the green of the mountains on one side and the blue of the Cantabrian Sea on the other.
One of the interesting routes, starting in Lezo and crossing Mount Jaizkibel, would be the one that reaches Hondarribia. Another proposal is to do the Xoxolurra – Alarguntza route. Along these routes, hikers will see
valuable farmhouses, such as: Olatzar, Borda, Minkura, Bordatxo, Darieta-zar “Daita”, Miura, Iribarren, Gaintza, Apaiziartza, Itzua bekoa, San Juan Iturria, Itxue, Galardi, Arpire-enea, Maisu Cristobal-enea, Susana-enea, Sagu-enea, Jamot-enea, Mandasayania, Pikandia-enea, Paskual-enea, Kuartela, Mariya-enea, Txerrimuno and Zabala-etxea.
