Baserritarra Costumes in Motion

Jantziaren Zentroa is hosting the exhibition “Baserritarrak” until January 3, a showcase dedicated to traditional Basque clothing. The exhibition brings together 15 baserritarra costumes from the late 19th century, all of them replicas created from original garments or historical photographs from the period.

Among the pieces on display are 13 women’s costumes, mainly from Bizkaia, as well as examples from Gipuzkoa and Zuberoa. Seven of these costumes are presented on rotating platforms, allowing visitors to admire every detail of the garments from all angles, including the back. A unique opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship and finishing touches of these traditional outfits.

The exhibition also includes two men’s smocks from Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa) and Aramaio (Álava), as well as explanatory panels and historical photographs from the early 20th century that provide context for the use and evolution of Basque rural clothing.

Talk: “The Secrets of the Baserritarra Costume”

During November, Jantziaren Zentroa will host a special demonstration talk exploring the traditional baserritarra costume and how it was made. As each garment is explained, a participant will be dressed step by step to show how the different pieces were worn, fastened, and assembled, including traditional accessories such as the headscarf.
